Le 9 avril 1786, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach dirige à Hambourg un concert de bienfaisance. Au programme, trois de ses meilleures oeuvres, représentatives de son génie : la Symphonie Wq 183/1 (1780), le Magnificat composé en 1749 dans l'espoir de succéder à son père comme Cantor de Leipzig, et enfin l'époustouflant Heilig (1776) à double choeur, dont il écrit : "Dans le genre, ce sera mon chant du cygne, et servira à ce qu'on ne m'oublie pas trop vite après ma mort." Il eut raison : 200 ans après sa naissance, ce CD reprenant le même programme en témoigne.
