Enregistré au printemps 2010 et mystérieusement abandonné par l'artiste avant sa sortie, l'album Welcome 2 America est une affirmation des espoirs de Prince, sa vision sur une société en mutation, annonçant à l'avance une ère de division politique, de désinformation et le renouveau du combat pour la justice raciale. L'album comprend quelques-unes des seules collaborations avec le bassiste Tal Wilkenfeld, le batteur Chris Coleman, et l'ingénieur Jason Angel, avec les contributions de choristes NPG Shelby J, Liv Warfield et Elisa Fiorillo, le clavier Morris Hayes, également à la coproduction de l'album avec Prince.
