La musicienne de jazz américaine Carla Bley (1936-2023), pianiste, compositrice, arrangeuse et cheffe d'orchestre, est devenue une figure emblématique grâce à son style original et non conventionnel. Elle a apporté au jazz un humour sardonique et des sonorités inédites, respectant les codes en les bousculant, rendant le complexe accessible et le simple intriguant. Son écriture associe harmonies atypiques et instrumentation audacieuse, créant un univers sonore unique, souvent teinté d'ironie. Le 14 mars 1984, le Carla Bley Band se produisait au Studio 10 du Norddeutscher Rundfunk à Hambourg. Cet ensemble de dix musiciens réunissait notamment Michael Mantler et le bassiste Steve Swallow, qui se souvient d'un concert intense et inspiré, porté par une énergie collective exceptionnelle. Ces enregistrements, préservés dans les archives du NDR, témoignent de la force expressive et de l'humanité de la musique de Carla Bley. Chaque mesure laisse entrevoir un clin d'oeil : un concert riche d'imagination, d'originalité, d'esprit libre et d'humour.
