Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach est le plus célèbre des fils de J.S. Bach. Son oeuvre magistrale est notamment constituée de concertos pour divers instruments et de pièces pour clavier. Mais ce compositeur a également excellé dans la musique vocale, poursuivant ainsi la tradition familiale en composant notamment des cantates et des lieders religieux et profanes. Ses oeuvres respectent les règles du style baroque tout en laissant percevoir les prémices du style classique, représenté plus tard par Haydn et Mozart.
