Créé le 16 mars 1750 au Covent Garden Theater, l'oratorio Theodora a manifestement surpris les Londoniens. En choisissant son sujet, Handel n'a-t-il pas en effet opéré un virage à cent quatre-vingts degrés ? Finis, les épisodes grandioses de l'Ancien Testament, les luttes glorieuses de Solo-mon, Saül ou Judas Maccabée : la jeune martyre Théodora n'est cheffe d'aucune communauté et ne mène pas de troupes au combat. Bien loin des oratorios bibliques à grand spectacle, c'est au récit poignant d'un drame personnel que nous convie Handel, un drame des débuts de la chrétienté qu'alimentent les déchirements de la conscience et de la foi.
