Charles Mingus (1922-1979), surnommé "l'homme en colère du jazz" est aujourd'hui encore une icône. Il était connu pour son tempérament intimidant et effrayant. Son talent musical sur la contrebasse, en tant que musicien, chef de groupe ou compositeur, était immense. Sa musique touche à toutes sortes de styles de jazz, du free au blues, hard bop, big band ou third stream, influencé par les orchestrations de Duke Ellington, mais toujours avec un élément d'irritation et de danger musical. Influencé par le jazz de la Nouvelle-Orléans, Mingus a également inventé l'improvisation collective (comme on peut l'entendre sur différents albums sur cette collection). Ce coffret passionnant est un voyage à travers sa musique fascinante, affichant toutes ses mutations artistiques et ses idiosyncrasies. Mingus est accompagné ici par une foule d'excellents musiciens tels Max Roach, Teo Macero, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker et Bud Powell.
