"Il Bajazet" fut commandé en 1735 pour ouvrir le Carnaval de Vérone. Antonio Vivaldi choisit un livret d'Agostino Piovene, inspiré de l'histoire bien connue du sultan ottoman Bajazet, vaincu et capturé par Tamerlan, qui tombe amoureux d'Asteria, la fière fille de Bajazet. Vivaldi était déjà âgé lorsqu'il acheva l'opéra. Il adapta sa musique aux goûts de son temps et employa la forme du pasticcio, intégrant des airs d'autres compositeurs, principalement napolitains. De telles incorporations étaient parfaitement acceptées à l'époque, et les oeuvres de ce genre connurent un grand succès. Le chef d'orchestre et spécialiste de Vivaldi, Federico Maria Sardelli, a intégré des airs longtemps perdus, a utilisé une orchestration historiquement informée et a transformé l'opéra en une expérience théâtrale d'une grande richesse. Renato Dolcini interprète le rôle-titre ; l'opéra italien des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles étant au coeur de son répertoire, il est parfaitement adapté à ce rôle. Il a chanté des rôles majeurs au Festival de Salzbourg, à Glyndebourne, à Amsterdam et ailleurs, et collabore avec certains des metteurs en scène les plus recherchés au monde, tels que Graham Vick et Barrie Kosky.
