3 jours avant sa mort, le 11 janvier 2016 et le jour de son 69ème anniversaire, David Bowie proposait "Blackstar", le 28ème album de sa carrière. Pour concevoir ce nouveau disque, David Bowie s'est enfermé au studio Magic Shop à New York, en compagnie de musiciens jazz locaux. Une réunion qui a mené, d'après le Times, à la conception d'un des albums les plus "étranges" du Thin White Duke, le surnom de David Bowie. Le journal britannique décrit ainsi l'album comme une "longue jam-session de jazz mélangée à des sections rythmiques puissantes dignes des groupes allemands des années 1970 comme Can ou Kraftwerk".
