Pour ''Collapse into now'', R.E.M. fait à nouveau équipe avec le producteur Jacknife Lee, qui a produit leur album précédent album de 2008, ''Accelerate''. Dans la même veine le groupe a enregistré 14 ballades énigmatiques mid-tempo semi-folk-rock, comme les décrit Peter Buck le guitariste du groupe. Ils ont enregistré l'album à la Nouvelle Orléans (Music Shed) et à Berlin aux célèbres Studios Hansa. Des invités prestigieux participent à l'album : Patti Smith, le guitariste Lenny Kaye, Peaches, Eddie Vedder, et Joel Gibb le chanteur de Hidden Camera.
