Chaque nouvel enregistrement de Haendel par The English Concert et Harry Bicket est une étape importante dans la discographie du compositeur, et la dernière, Serse - un régal spectaculaire pour les amoureux de Haendel (The Times) - ne fait pas exception. Créé pour étonner le public londonien en 1728, l'opéra romantique et parfois comique de Haendel est un spectaculaire drame d'amour, de guerre, de pouvoir et de génie civil qui se déroule dans l'ancienne Perse, et dont l'aria d'ouverture, Ombra mai fu , reste un favori durable. Serse règne sur un vaste empire, mais le coeur humain est plus difficile à commander, et parfois la beauté d'un platane est la seule constante dans un monde dangereux. L'oeuvre est complétée par une distribution de classe mondiale, dont l'extraordinaire Emily D'Angelo (The Daily Telegraph) dans le rôle du roi amoureux et Lucy Crowe dans celui de Romilda.
