Lorsqu'il vivait en Italie, Haendel a absorbé la musique de ses contemporains et appris de nouveaux styles à la mode. Même si la mise en scène de La resurrezione fut un événement mémorable dans le monde musical romain, c'est la production d'Agrippina qui a fait connaître Handel comme compositeur d'opéra. Il a rencontré un franc succès et d'innombrables performances ont suivi. Son pouvoir mélodique est époustouflant et, dans la création de personnages crédibles, l'alternance de récits et d'airs, Handel a créé le modèle de structure pour le reste de sa carrière opératique.
